The extra pour #9
Your guide to Mercury retrograde (yep, it’s coming round again!), and channelling your inner confidence.
Energy forecast for July 29 – August 4, 2024
If you’ve been thinking about making a change or doing something new, the stars are on your side this week. Many of the oracle cards, too, are reiterating aspects of Leo energy – confidence, creativity and leadership – as we head towards next Sunday’s new moon in the sign of the Lion.

Spiritual concept: Mercury retrograde
If you’ve never heard of Mercury retrograde, congratulations on your absence from social media. Discussion about this astrological transit, which happens three to four times a year, tends to make a lot of noise online. The next Mercury retrograde hits NEXT Sunday (August 4, not today) and lasts until August 27, and the reason I didn’t mention it in the energy forecast video is because I don’t buy into the hype around it.
It’s true that Mercury – the planet of communication and communication tech, short trips, community and thought processes, among other things – can cause drama when it goes retrograde. This is when the planet appears to be moving backwards in the sky (but isn’t really). However, Mercury retrograde isn’t responsible for anywhere near as much chaos as Instagram would have to believe. Plus, it definitely has advantages, like slowing things down so we have better capacity for reflection.
Here are the main issues commonly associated with Mercury retrograde:
· Misunderstandings and resulting conflicts (tip: be careful about how you use your words)
· Tech breakdowns (this is why astrologers recommend backing up important documents and resetting passwords ahead of time)
· Heavy traffic and public transport meltdowns (tip: allow extra time to get places)
· Difficulty getting mental clarity
· Unexpectedly slow progress with projects and tasks.
In short, Mercury retrograde is definitely a thing, but it isn’t something I spend much time worrying about. If you’d like to know more about the positive aspects of this planetary transit, check out a blog I wrote a few years ago here.
